This morning we were taken out from Joy’s House by Chiangmai and Fhe, two of the young students from the house. Fhe is 19 and learning to take guests on tours and working on his English. Chiangmai is 16, quite confident with his English and a lovely young man happy to tell you what he knows about the area he is named after…
First, we drove out to the Doi Saket Hot Springs.
As you would expect, it was a bit smelly, the sulphur/rotten egg smell, and when you were near to the springs the air was hot and humid…
however the set up of the place was quite clever, as they funnelled the hot water from the spring down through a pipe into an open channel where you could sit and soak your feet….if you could handle the heat…
it was very, very hot…even the boys didn’t put their feet in for more than a couple of seconds….long enough to take a photo…
I tried putting mine in the open channel, however it was too hot for me to keep them in….so I moved to the babies paddling pool instead…
this was still really hot, I think you would cook your baby if you put it in there…but I managed to keep them in long enough to get used too it and then it was quite enjoyable…though after about five minutes I felt sufficiently cooked…as you can see, the water was just over ankle deep…
Before we cooked our feet, we had bought some eggs in little bamboo baskets and placed them into the hot spring pool.
Chiangmai had said that the eggs would cook from the inside out, rather than the outside in…I didn’t believe him…but he was right, the yolk of the egg was hard, yet most of the white was still runny…
they tasted like normal eggs (funnily enough) and were quite good with soy sauce and pepper. David had some of the little quail eggs, which had cooked all the way through…
After our soaking and snacking, we did a little browsing…I found a basket made of packing straps which I thought would be nice for picnics or craft stuff…yes, it will be awkward to cart around Asia and take one planes, but I liked it so I bought it…here’s hoping it survives all the way home.
